In Acts chapter 5 we read of an interesting and also frightening story of a man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira. This account is about and man and his wife who lied, only once, and died! I know many people who are not Christians who try to defend lying, or at least say it isn’t “so bad.” Or many times people will say, “What is so bad about lying, it doesn’t hurt anybody?” Or, “It’s not like I killed somebody, I only told a little lie.” Sometimes it is easy for us as Christians to believe this kind of thinking or logic as well, however this in itself is a lie!
We know from Scripture it is against God’s character to lie (Num 23:19; Heb 6:18). For this reason we are commanded not to lie, it is a sin to lie (Deut 5:20; Lev 19:11; Prov 12:22; Col 3:9). However, so often it seems like lying is seen as only a “little sin.” And for this reason the story of Ananias and Sapphira is frightening. This couple was killed by God because they lied!
Some people may be tempted to think bad about God from this passage. Why would God not have mercy on them? Why is God so mean? Why did God not give them a second chance? But instead of thinking this way we should be instead amazed at the holiness of God and God’s mercy for us. God has told us that the penalty for sin is death, therefore what God did to them was just. How amazing God’s mercy is for us that while we sin everyday He still has mercy on us? Even more He has justified us by the blood of Christ and made us sons and daughters.
